VIDEO GAMES AS THERAPY OF SOCIAL DISORDERS

Video games are synonyms of leisure, entertainment or fun. Each new launch represents a technological leap that has repercussions in sectors as diverse as aeronautics, engineering or education. However, and although it is much less known, they can also improve the quality of life of a patient, or at least help him to cope with treatments for diseases as serious as cancer. Even being part of complementary therapies in some pathologies. This is supported by various medical studies that have been compiled in the latest issue of the magazine 'Injuve' presented this Tuesday and dedicated entirely to analyzing the relationship between video games and youth from various angles.

"Video games are demonized without knowing them. They represent a future job opportunity and help weak social groups, "explains the Secretary of State for Social Services and Equality, Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, who defends the more social side of the industry. And it is that beyond a business that only in Spain invoices 1,120 million euros - it is the fourth buyer country in the EU - there are great medical possibilities still to be explored. In fact, nearly 4,000 hospitals in the United States use video games as part of analgesic therapy or to improve hospital therapy.

One of those studies is the one carried out at the University Hospital of Newark (New Jersey), where the behavior of 78 children who had to be anesthetized before entering the operating room was analyzed. The researchers observed that the children who left a portable console 20 minutes before the operation had a much lower level of anxiety than the rest.

But video games can also help cope with treatments as tough as chemotherapy. This is demonstrated by research carried out by the HopeLab organization in 375 cancer patients diagnosed between the ages of 13 and 29 in centers in the United States, Canada and Australia. In the experiment they created a specific video game for this project in which the protagonist toured the human body destroying cancer cells. 80% of the young people who used it faced its treatment with more interest and reinforced their fighting position. In addition, they endured higher levels of chemotherapy in their blood.

Patients with impulse control disorders are other beneficiaries of the use of video games for their treatment as long as it complements pharmacological therapy. For example, the case of a child who while using one of these consoles stopped pinching and self-injuring his face.
